Chassis Fan Tray Removal
and Replacement Guide
For the Switch 4007R 8-Slot Chassis
This guide describes how to remove and install a fan tray (Model Number
3CB9EF) for the Switch 4007R 8-slot chassis.
WARNING: The Switch 4007R fan tray must be installed and removed
only by trained service personnel.
You can install a new fan tray in your Switch 4007R chassis while the
power is on (which is referred to as hot swapping).
Fan Tray Description The Switch 4007R chassis and its modules are cooled by fan trays. The
8-slot chassis contains two fan trays, each of which contains three fans
(Figure 1). Four fans cool the switch fabric modules, interface modules,
and management modules and the two fans cool the power supply bay
area.

CAUTION: Before you completely remove the fan tray, wait until all the
fans in the fan tray stop rotating.
3 Carefully pull the fan tray straight out from the chassis, making sure that you
do not damage the connector and guide pin on the rear of the fan tray
(Figure 5).
Installing a Fan Tray Follow the instructions in this section to unpack and install a new fan tray.
Unpacking
To unpack a fan tray:
1 Open the shipping box and remove the fan tray.
2 Inspect the fan tray for damage. If the fan tray, its connector, or its guide
pin (Figure 4) appear to be damaged, repack the fan tray in the shipping
box and contact your local supplier.
All shipping boxes are reusable. After you remove all contents, replace
the packing materials and store the box for future use.

Installing
You can install a new fan tray in your Switch 4007R chassis while the
power is on (which is referred to as hot swapping).

chassis.
2 Locate the guide pin and connector on the fan tray (Figure 4).

4 Align the fan tray connector and the backplane connector.
5 Use the guide pin on the fan tray and the guide pin holes on the
backplane of the chassis and gently push the fan tray inward until the fan
tray connector and backplane connector engage.
You feel a slight resistance as the connectors engage.
CAUTION: If the resistance is too great, the fan tray connector and
backplane connector may not be aligned properly. Do not force the fan
reinsert the fan tray, ensuring that the connectors are properly aligned.
6 Verify that the fan tray is flush with the back of the chassis. If the fan tray
and the chassis are not aligned, remove the fan tray and reseat it.
7 Using a flat-blade screwdriver, tighten the spring-loaded screws to secure
the fan tray to the chassis (Figure 2).
The fans begin rotating the moment that you power on the chassis or
insert a fan tray into a powered-on chassis.
8 Visually inspect all installed fans to verify that each is turning without
interruption. If a fan is not running, shut the power off and remove and
reinsert the fan tray.

Operating Guidelines Follow these operating guidelines for the fan trays for the Switch 4007R
8-slot chassis.
CAUTION: For the module bay area and the power supply bay area, if a
fan in one fan tray fails, a trap message alerts you to replace the fan tray
within 48 hours. For the power supply bay area, if a fan in one fan tray
fails and the temperature is 45 °C (113 °F) or greater, a trap message
alerts you to replace the fan tray immediately. The Switch 4007R sends a
trap message and can continue to run if one fan fails in one fan tray.
However, if a second or third fan fails, in that same fan tray, no trap
message is generated.
